Agate Private School

What We Do

Agate Private School supports self-directed education for primarily independent learners. We have no central campus or physical classrooms.

We act as facilitators: bringing information together, helping learners and families find resources, and offering curriculum guidance when they choose to use it. Learners’ interests and choices guide the support we provide.

Support shaped around your learner

We begin with your learner’s strengths, interests and goals. Together, we explore approaches, resources and experiences that suit them. This can include finding a starting point, adjusting a learning plan or making the transition from conventional schooling.

Learners are free to follow any learning path they choose. Agate’s programs are options, not a required curriculum.

Recognise and document learning

Projects, conversations, work, volunteering and everyday experiences can all reveal learning. We help families recognise that learning, make connections between ideas and organise evidence of progress.

Our wholistic learning assessment overview explains how we consider the whole learner. Deconstructing Subjects shows how knowledge connects across everyday activities. Enrolled learners can use their portfolios to record work and reflections, with access for their linked parents and Agate staff.

Maintain Ontario Student Records

Agate’s Ontario Student Record (OSR) service applies to learners in Ontario, primarily those who have previously attended public education. Where applicable, Agate acts as custodian of the learner’s OSR, maintaining it in accordance with Ministry of Education guidelines and handling required Ministry reporting.

Learner portfolios help document experiences and evidence of learning. A portfolio entry does not automatically become part of the OSR. Contact Agate about whether an OSR applies to your learner or about records and transfers from a previous school.

Find resources and local connections

We help learners and families find courses, tools, books, projects and other resources that fit their interests. Choices can come from Agate, another provider or a learner’s own ideas.

We also help learners and families find like-minded families and learning resources in their own areas.

Our connections include:

These associations, together with other alternative-education networks, help us point families towards resources and connections close to home and further afield.

Visit Programs for resources available through Agate and options beyond the school. Check the calendar for current activities and joining instructions.

Plan transitions and future pathways

We help families understand learning records, prepare questions and explain their learner’s needs when speaking with schools, services or other educational organisations.

If college or university is a goal, Agate works with the learner and the institution’s admissions team to identify prerequisites and document relevant learning. This may involve equivalency assessment, Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR), admission testing or other evidence. Requirements and admission decisions rest with the receiving institution.

Enrollment information explains school fees and separately priced optional services, including PLAR.

Consultations for new clients

You do not need to enrol in Agate to seek individual guidance. Gayle Hanlon, Agate’s Principal, offers Natural Learning & Educational Pathways Consultations: a 60-minute online conversation with personalised guidance and a brief written summary of recommendations.

This standalone service is separate from school enrollment fees and the support arrangements for existing learner families. If your family is already enrolled, contact us about your existing support.

Training and coaching for professionals

We also offer training and coaching for educators, social workers, school boards, government staff and daycare providers. Contact us to discuss support with self-directed learning, learner agency and trauma-informed approaches, and what would be useful in your setting.
