Founded in 1983 Agate Private School (Toronto) and listed with the Ministry of Education, expressly for like-minded families and in order to better keep track of the number of alternatively educating families. Agate follows the Democratic, Self Directed, Sociocratic and Sudbury Models.
Fostering heuristic and autodidactic education, students run this UnSchool by democratic process. Unlike the Push systems of education where the subject matter is already decided by arbitrary entities, Agate students use a Pull System to reach out to acquire the information they need. Voluntary attendance, Autonomy in Curriculum design, Self Graduation and Year Round Calendar help remove obstacles to learning.
Boarders, distance learners and day students collaborate to make a unique learning experience. Agate Private School strives to offer “spontaneous diversity of choice” with students “stimulating an open-ended curriculum”. Charles William Eliot, President of Harvard University 1869-1909
In 2000 Agate Private School merged with Banyan Tree School (also established in 1983, London ON).
Now Agate serves a small eclectic elite number of students who require and desire something different.
